TL;DR

Log Bait is one of the best ladder decks in Clash Royale in 2026. The core strategy has not changed: bait your opponent into wasting their small spell, then punish with Goblin Barrel. The top version right now is Log Bait at 58.7% WR across 1,085 battles. Real win rate data for every variant is tracked daily on RoyaleTracker's Log Bait page.

#1

Log Bait

Evo Goblin BarrelGoblin Barrel

PrincessPrincess
Goblin GangGoblin Gang
Ice SpiritIce Spirit
The LogThe Log
Inferno TowerInferno Tower

The most-played Log Bait shell right now. Evo Goblin Barrel is the core win condition: its evolved goblins survive The Log on their first hit, forcing your opponent to spend two resources to stop it. Knight tanks on defense while your Inferno Tower charges. Princess baits Log or Arrows from range. Goblin Gang baits a second spell. Rocket finishes low towers. Inferno Tower handles every tank in the game.

Key tip

If your opponent has already used their Log on Princess, throw Goblin Barrel immediately. That is the entire deck in one move.

#2

HeroKnight Log Bait 2.9 Cycle

2.9 elixir

Evo Goblin BarrelGoblin Barrel
Hero KnightKnight
Evo PrincessPrincess
Goblin GangGoblin Gang
Dart GoblinDart Goblin
Ice SpiritIce Spirit
The LogThe Log
Inferno TowerInferno Tower

The fastest cycling variant. Hero Knight replaces Rocket and Knight, giving you a powerful melee hero that deals damage on the bridge and forces spells. Evo Princess is extremely hard to deal with from range -- she survives Log on her evolved shots. Dart Goblin adds a third ranged threat. No Rocket means you cycle back to Goblin Barrel faster. More battle volume than most variants in this tier.

Key tip

Use Hero Knight ability offensively when your opponent is spell-empty. The ability deals direct tower damage and forces an immediate answer.

#3

EvoValk Log Bait

Evo ValkyrieValkyrie
Goblin BarrelGoblin Barrel
RocketRocket
PrincessPrincess
Goblin GangGoblin Gang
Ice SpiritIce Spirit
The LogThe Log
Inferno TowerInferno Tower

The high-volume defensive variant. Evo Valkyrie replaces Knight as the defensive backbone. Her evolution spins continuously, shredding swarms and making her nearly impossible to stop with small troops. Goblin Barrel runs without the evo here, meaning the win condition is spread across Goblin Barrel, Rocket cycle and Evo Valkyrie counter-pushes. Slower avg elixir but extremely solid defensively.

Key tip

Evo Valkyrie counter-pushes are the main win condition here, not just Goblin Barrel. Protect her on defense and walk her into their side whenever you have an elixir advantage.

Why Log Bait Has Never Left the Meta

Log Bait has been one of the most played archetypes on ladder since Goblin Barrel was released. Most archetypes collapse when their key card gets nerfed. Log Bait does not, because it does not rely on any single card being overpowered. Three reasons it survives every patch:

Every card in the deck baits a different spell

Princess baits Log and Arrows. Goblin Gang baits Zap and Barbarian Barrel. Goblin Barrel forces Log or Arrows again. By the time your opponent has answered all three threats once, they have no spells left in cycle. The Goblin Barrel connects for free. This loop works regardless of what Supercell patches.

3.3 avg elixir is fast enough to out-cycle most answers

At 3.3 avg elixir you can throw Goblin Barrel, defend, and be back to Goblin Barrel before many 4.0 decks have cycled through their counter once. Opponents who only run one spell answer will always be behind the pace of your cycle.

Rocket gives you a win condition that ignores the board

If your Goblin Barrel is being stopped consistently, you switch to Rocket cycle. Every 12 seconds you Rocket their tower whether they are defending or not. This is why Log Bait does not get fully countered -- it just shifts win conditions mid-game.

How to Play Log Bait

The gameplan is one sentence: force your opponent to spend their small spell on the wrong thing, then punish with Goblin Barrel. Here is how to execute it.

  1. Identify their spell in the first 60 secondsOpen with Princess at the back or Goblin Gang at the bridge. Watch what spell they use to answer it. Log, Arrows, Zap, Barbarian Barrel: knowing which one they have changes how you sequence your next three plays. If they use Log on Princess, Goblin Barrel goes in immediately.
  2. Always have two threats in the same cycleNever play Princess and then sit there. Follow it with Goblin Gang or Dart Goblin within two seconds. Your opponent now needs two spells to answer both. They only have one. One of your threats gets through.
  3. Track their spell cycle before committing Goblin BarrelGoblin Barrel costs 3 elixir. If their Log or Arrows is available, they answer it for 2 elixir and you trade down. Wait until you have baited their spell with something else in the last 5 to 8 seconds. Then throw Goblin Barrel. It lands clean.
  4. Use Inferno Tower to shut down tanksLog Bait's natural weakness is large tanks. Inferno Tower handles every tank in the game if placed correctly. Drop it in the pocket (centre of your side) so it targets the tank before it reaches the bridge. Never let a Golem or Pekka reach the river without Inferno Tower already locked on.
  5. Switch to Rocket cycle when ahead on towersOnce you take a tower or get them below 600 HP, stop sending Goblin Barrel and start cycling Rocket. Rocket does enough damage at tournament level that three or four Rockets end the game before double elixir. Keep Goblin Barrel pressure going so they cannot fully commit to offense.

Best Evolutions for Log Bait in 2026

Evo Goblin BarrelGoblin Barrel

Evo Goblin Barrel -- non-negotiable

Evo Goblin Barrel's evolved goblins survive The Log on their first hit. Your opponent cannot cleanly answer it with one small spell -- they need a spell plus a troop. That two-resource requirement is the entire point of the deck. Run this in every Log Bait variant. It appears in the top two decks in the current data.

Evo ValkyrieValkyrie

Evo Valkyrie -- best second evo for Classic builds

Evo Valkyrie is the highest-volume second evo in the current data (3,182 battles). Her continuous spin makes her nearly impossible to stop with swarms, which is exactly what Log Bait faces when opponents try to defend with Skeleton Army or Goblin Gang. She also walks into counter-pushes better than Knight because she clears troops on both sides.

Evo PrincessPrincess

Evo Princess -- best for fast cycle builds

Evo Princess appears in the #2 deck (HeroKnight 2.9 Cycle). Her evolved shots survive The Log, which means opponents need two separate spells to deal with both Evo Princess and Evo Goblin Barrel in the same cycle. At 2.9 avg elixir, there is almost no window to answer both threats before one connects.

Hero KnightKnight

Hero Knight -- the best hero for this archetype

Hero Knight replaces Rocket in the 2.9 cycle variant. His ability deals direct damage to the tower and forces an immediate answer, functioning as a second win condition alongside Goblin Barrel. The Knight base card has always been a Log Bait staple. The hero version upgrades that role significantly without changing the deck structure.

What Counters Log Bait

Log Bait is strong but it has real weaknesses. Here is what to watch for.

TornadoTornado

Tornado

Tornado pulls Goblin Barrel goblins away from the tower mid-air and activates the King Tower. Against Tornado decks, wait until they use Tornado on something else before throwing Goblin Barrel. A Tornado-activated King Tower is a third tower you need to deal with for the rest of the game.

Barbarian BarrelBarbarian Barrel

Barbarian Barrel

Barbarian Barrel rolls through Goblin Barrel and kills all three goblins while the Barbarian stays as a body. Decks with Barbarian Barrel as their only small spell are rough matchups. Keep Princess alive so they spend Barbarian Barrel on her, then throw Goblin Barrel when they are spell-empty.

Mega KnightMega Knight

Mega Knight

Mega Knight jumps onto Goblin Barrel goblins and kills all three instantly. He also counters Goblin Gang in one stomp. Against Mega Knight decks, use Inferno Tower on him every time and never let him reach your tower without it already locked on. Your Goblin Barrel damage will come from bait, not from fighting through Mega Knight.

Hero WizardHero Wizard

Hero Wizard

New in 2026. Hero Wizard's ability clears entire swarms in one activation, which counters Princess, Goblin Gang and even Goblin Barrel goblins at once. If you see Hero Wizard across from you, do not commit multiple swarm cards in the same cycle. Spread your threats across two separate cycles so his ability can only answer one.

The most reliable way to beat Log Bait is spell discipline: save your Log exclusively for Goblin Barrel and use a second small spell (Zap or Arrows) or a troop to handle Princess and Goblin Gang. Most players lose to Log Bait because they use Log on Princess and then have no answer when Goblin Barrel lands.

If you prefer a fast cycle deck without the spell-management complexity, the Hog Cycle guide covers the 2.6 archetype as a direct alternative.

Is Log Bait Worth Building in 2026?

Yes, with one honest caveat: Log Bait has a higher skill ceiling than most ladder staples. Unlike Hog Cycle where the gameplan is almost mechanical (cycle back, track counter, push), Log Bait requires you to read your opponent's spell cycle in real time and sequence your threats accordingly. You will lose games early while learning the matchup. That is normal.

The reward is a deck that beats almost everything once you have the matchup knowledge. Log Bait does not have a hard counter the way some archetypes do. Every matchup is winnable with correct sequencing.

For card investment, the core is also realistic for non-spending players. Goblin Barrel, Princess, Goblin Gang, Knight and Inferno Tower are all obtainable without Legendary drops or heavy gem spending. Rocket is the one Epic that takes time to max but it is not a gating card at mid-ladder. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Log Bait deck in Clash Royale right now?

Based on real win rate data from RoyaleTracker, the top Log Bait deck right now is Log Bait at 58.7% WR across 1,085 battles. HeroKnight Log Bait 2.9 Cycle is close behind at 58.6% WR. Win rates for all variants are tracked daily at royaletracker.gg/best-decks/log-bait.

What is the best Evolution for Log Bait?

Evo Goblin Barrel is the must-have evolution for every Log Bait variant. Its evolved goblins survive The Log on the first hit, which directly breaks the opponent's main counter to the deck. As a second evolution, Evo Valkyrie is the highest-volume pick in the current data. Evo Princess pairs best with Hero Knight in the fast cycle build.

What counters Log Bait in 2026?

Spell discipline is the most reliable counter. Save your Log exclusively for Goblin Barrel and use a second small spell or a troop to answer Princess and Goblin Gang. Without good spell management you will always run out of answers. Tornado, Barbarian Barrel and Mega Knight are the strongest individual card counters. Hero Wizard's ability can clear multiple swarm threats in one activation, which is a new complication added in 2026.

Is Log Bait good for beginners?

Log Bait is intermediate difficulty, not beginner-friendly. The deck requires you to track your opponent's spell cycle in real time and sequence your threats around it. Mistakes are punished more than in faster cycle decks. If you are new to the game, Hog Cycle at 2.6 avg elixir is a better starting point. If you already understand elixir trading, Log Bait has one of the highest skill ceilings on ladder and rewards the time investment.

How is Log Bait different from Hog Cycle?

Both are cycle archetypes but they operate differently. Hog Cycle at 2.6 avg elixir is faster, more mechanical and has a simpler gameplan: cycle back to Hog Rider and chip the tower. Log Bait at 3.3 avg elixir is slower and relies on reading your opponent's hand to sequence spell baits before committing the win condition. Log Bait has a higher skill ceiling. Hog Cycle has a lower skill floor. Neither is objectively better; the right choice depends on your playstyle.

Log Bait has survived every balance patch since Goblin Barrel launched because the mechanic it is built on (forcing spell trades) does not break when a card gets nerfed. Pick the variant that matches your evolution unlocks, learn to read your opponent's spell cycle, and you will be competitive at every trophy range from Arena 15 to Ultimate Champion.
