TL;DR

Hog Cycle is still one of the best ladder decks in May 2026. The top version runs Evo Skeletons and Evo Cannon at 2.6 avg elixir. Classic 2.6 without evolutions is fully competitive at every trophy range. The gameplan never changes: cycle back to Hog Rider, track their counter, and chip the tower.

Ice GolemIce Golem
Evo CannonCannon
Ice SpiritIce Spirit
Evo SkeletonsSkeletons
FireballFireball
The LogThe Log

The version most competitive players run right now. Evo Skeletons gives you a free second set of skeletons every cycle — massive value for 1 elixir. Evo Cannon clears troops from across the board when its evolution activates, making it one of the best defensive buildings in the game. Same core gameplan as classic 2.6 but the defense is significantly stronger.

Key tip

If you have both evos unlocked, run this version. The defensive upgrade is substantial enough to matter in close games.

#2

Classic 2.6 Hog Cycle

MusketeerMusketeer
Ice GolemIce Golem
CannonCannon
Ice SpiritIce Spirit
SkeletonsSkeletons
FireballFireball
The LogThe Log

The original. No evolutions needed, which makes it the best Hog Cycle deck for players who have not unlocked evos yet. The gameplan is the same — cycle back to Hog Rider as fast as possible and chip the tower. Musketeer handles air and tanks. Cannon stops Hog Rider, Ram Rider and most ground win conditions. Fireball and Log cover every spell target you will face.

Key tip

Low skill floor, high skill ceiling. Start here if you are new to the archetype.

Evo FirecrackerFirecracker

EarthquakeEarthquake
The LogThe Log

Earthquake replaces Fireball and Cannon, Firecracker replaces Musketeer. This variant plays faster and punishes buildings harder — Earthquake destroys Inferno Tower, Tesla and Cannon in one spell, which is Hog Cycle's biggest weakness. Evo Firecracker provides better air defense and splash damage than Musketeer in most situations.

Key tip

Harder to play than classic 2.6 but better in the current building-heavy meta.

Why Hog Cycle Has Survived Every Meta

Hog Cycle has been a top ladder deck since 2017. Most decks come and go with balance patches. This one does not. Three reasons:

2.6 avg elixir is the lowest viable cycle speed in the game

At 2.6, you cycle back to Hog Rider every 10 seconds. Your opponent spends 4-6 elixir defending each push. You cycle again before they have recovered. Over a 3-minute match that is 15-18 Hog Rider attempts. Some of them will connect.

The Hog Rider and Musketeer counter-push is timeless

When your opponent sends something into your Cannon, your Musketeer kills it. Then Hog Rider goes in behind the Musketeer while your opponent has nothing in cycle to stop it. This combo has worked at every trophy range for 8 years.

Fireball and The Log cover the entire meta

Fireball kills Musketeer, Wizard, Witch, Executioner — every medium-cost troop in the game. The Log wipes skeletons, goblins, bats and Princess. Between the two spells there is almost nothing you cannot handle.

How to Play Hog Cycle

The gameplan is simple: cycle back to Hog Rider and chip the tower. Here is how to execute it.

  1. Open with a cheap card to scoutPlay Skeletons or Ice Spirit on your side of the map at the start. Watch what your opponent plays in response. This tells you their win condition and which hog counter they are running before you have spent any real elixir.
  2. Identify their hog counter and track itEvery deck has a hog counter — Inferno Tower, Tesla, Cannon, Tornado, Pekka, Mini Pekka. Once you know what it is, never play Hog Rider when that card is in cycle. Wait until they have used it elsewhere.
  3. Build counter-pushes after defenseWhen your Cannon kills an enemy Hog Rider or your Musketeer takes down a push, do not just sit there. Play your Hog Rider immediately behind them while your opponent has nothing left to defend with. This is where most of your damage comes from — not from blind Hog attacks.
  4. Spell-cycle low towersThe moment your opponent's tower drops below 400 HP, start cycling Fireball at it even if you do not hit troops. At 2.6 avg elixir you can afford it. A Fireball does 468 damage at tournament level. Two Fireballs is 936. That ends games.
  5. Double elixir: go wideIn double elixir spam Hog Rider every single cycle. The pressure becomes impossible to handle. Send it on both sides. If they defend one, the other connects. Keep Musketeer alive behind the Hog for maximum threat.

What Beats Hog Cycle

Hog Cycle is strong but it has real weaknesses. Here is what to watch for.

Inferno TowerInferno Tower

Inferno Tower

The hardest counter. It melts the Hog Rider before it reaches the tower and there is not much you can do about it. Best play is Ice Spirit to reset the Inferno charge, then Fireball the Inferno Tower plus anything nearby. Hog + Ice Spirit + Fireball can take it out if timed right.

TornadoTornado

Tornado

Pulls the Hog Rider away from the tower at the last second and activates the King Tower, turning their King Tower into a third defensive building. Against Tornado decks, wait until Tornado is out of cycle before committing a Hog push.

GolemGolem
Lava HoundLava Hound
Elixir GolemElixir Golem

Heavy Beatdown

Golem, Lava Hound, Elixir Golem: they spend 9 elixir building a push your 5 elixir cannot stop. Your only path is to out-chip them on the opposite lane faster than they can destroy your tower. Go aggressive early before they build momentum.

GraveyardGraveyard

Graveyard Control

Annoying but manageable. Use Cannon in the pocket for the Graveyard. If Cannon is not available, Musketeer plus cheap cycle cards can clean it up. Never let them pair Graveyard with a tank; that is where it gets out of hand.

Hog Cycle in 2026 — What Changed with Evolutions

The core gameplan has not changed. But evolutions made the deck significantly stronger defensively.

Evo Skeletons is the biggest upgrade. When cycled, you get a second set of skeletons for free. That means 1 elixir gives you 6 skeleton bodies instead of 3. Against Hog Rider, Mega Knight, Prince and any single-target troop, this is a massive defensive swing.

Evo Cannon fires across the full board when its evolution activates. A regular Cannon can only target what is near it. Evo Cannon clears troops on the opposite side of the arena. Combined with its regular Cannon pull, it is one of the best defensive buildings in the game right now.

One important note for 2026: the current deck slot rules allow 1 Evo, 1 Hero and 1 Wild slot (which can be a second Evo or a Hero). Classic 2.6 players running two evos should make sure their deck setup follows this structure. Check the current normal battles meta to see exactly how top players are building their Hog Cycle slots right now.

Is Hog Cycle Good for Beginners?

Yes — it is one of the best starter decks in the game. At 2.6 avg elixir, mistakes are forgiving. If you misplace a card you cycle back to your hand fast enough to recover. Slower beatdown decks at 4.0+ avg elixir punish mistakes much harder because you wait 15 seconds to get a card back.

The gameplan is also simple enough to learn quickly. Play cheap cards, defend, send Hog Rider when your opponent is empty. You can understand the basics in 10 games. Mastering the matchup knowledge takes much longer but you will win games while you are learning.

The biggest challenge for beginners is tracking the opponent's hog counter. Once you can do that consistently — knowing exactly when to send your Hog and when to wait — your win rate will jump. Frequently Asked Questions

Is Hog Cycle still good in May 2026?

Yes. Hog Cycle is tracking in the top tier of competitive ladder decks on RoyaleTracker as of May 2026. It has been a top ladder deck since 2017 and remains one of the safest long-term investments in the game. Balance patches have never been able to kill it because the archetype does not rely on any single overpowered card.

What is the best Hog Cycle variant in May 2026?

Based on real win rate data from RoyaleTracker, Evo Skeletons + Evo Cannon 2.6 is the top performing variant in May 2026. If you have not unlocked evolutions yet, classic 2.6 (Musketeer, Ice Golem, Cannon, Fireball, Log) is the next best option and still fully competitive.

What counters Hog Cycle?

Inferno Tower is the hardest counter — it melts the Hog before it reaches the tower. Tornado is also strong, pulling the Hog away and activating the King Tower. Heavy beatdown decks (Golem, Lava Hound) beat Hog Cycle if they build large enough pushes.

Is Hog Cycle good for beginners?

Yes — it is one of the best beginner decks in Clash Royale. The 2.6 avg elixir makes mistakes forgiving, the gameplan is simple and the deck does not require legendary or evolution cards to be competitive in its classic form.

How do you play Hog Cycle in double elixir?

Spam Hog Rider every cycle in double elixir. At 2.6 avg elixir you can afford to send Hog Rider, defend whatever they play, and be back to Hog Rider again before they have recovered. Keep Musketeer alive wherever possible for counter-push threat. If their tower is low, start cycling Fireball even without troop value — two Fireballs is often enough to close the game.

Hog Cycle has survived every meta change since 2017 because the core loop — cycle fast, track their counter, chip the tower — is fundamentally sound. Pick the variant that matches your evo unlocks, learn the matchups one at a time, and you will have a competitive deck at every trophy range. Use the meta decks hub to explore more options.
